Burton Egbert Stevenson, an American author, studied at Princeton and later founded the American Library in Paris. He wrote mystery novels, travel books, and childrens' books, .

Arthur J. Rees was an Australian who moved to England where he was a journalist for the London Times. He wrote mystery novels, many of which are set in either England or Wales. His work is included in Great Short Stories of Detection, Mystery and Horror. His books have been translated into French and German. Several of his books were published in America.

Baroness Orczy was a English novelist, playwright, and artist. Her novels featuring the Scarlet Pimpernel are widely read. She attended West London School of Art and Heatherley's School of Fine Art. At school she met the illustrator Montague MacLean Barstow whom she married. To earn extra income after the birth of her son, she wrote a series of detective stories for The Royal Magazine. She and her husband wrote a play based on one of those stories. The play's protaganist, Sir Percy Blakeney, The Scarlet Pimpernel, rescued French aristocrats from the French Revolution. The play ran four years in London, setting stage records. It was produced in other countries and had several revivals. Her novelization of the play was a great success.

The Old Man In the Corner features Bill Owen, Orczy's armchair detective. The character had appeared in stories The Royal Magazine. The Old Man tells of cases from the newspaper and courtroom visits to the character Polly Burton, a journalist, while tying complicated knots in a piece of string.
