Susan Coolidge was the pen name of Sarah Chauncey Woolsey [1835-1905]. Sarah was a nurse in the Civil War (1861-1865). In 1871, she published her first book "The New-Year's Bargain Tales", edited by Louisa May Alcott (also a former Union Army nurse.) She then began the "Katy Did" series: "What Katy Did" (or What Katy did at Home) (1872), "What Katy Did at School" (1873), "What Katy Did Next" (1886), "Clover" (1888), and "In the High Valley" (1890). The characters of the series are modeled on herself and her siblings during their childhood. She authored more than thirty books for young readers including "Little Bo-Beep" (1901).
Reviews:
"The writing is [in a] light, amusing, irreverent style that is carefully constructed but looks effortless."--Joyce McDonald
